In Genesis, the bible describes God speaking creation into existence. In Exodus, the Bible describes another creative act that resulted from God speaking: the establishment of his people at Mt Sinai. It is because of this connection between creation and the Ten Commandments that the earliest traditions didn’t call the Ten Commandments, the Ten Commandments, but instead, the Ten Words.
